Filipinos were against the colonization and waged a nationalist revolution in 1896. June 12, 1898 was declared the Philippine independence from Spain by Emilio Aguinaldo who also proclaimed himself the president. Spaniards left after governing for 333 years but were replaced by the Americans continuing to colonize the country. They brought over their democratic form of government, legal system and educational system. July 4, 1946 was recognized as Philippine independence from Americans.
