DRY TORTUGAS

Distanced Heaven

Hiding in the heart of Key West, Dry Tortugas will surely capture your heart with its rich history and fascinating scenery. This paradise was first discovered by the explorer Juan Ponce de León, has become a naval station for the United States, and was known in the past because of the famous Fort Jefferson that started because of John Rodgers. Fort Jefferson was designed to be a massive gun platform, impervious to assault, and able to destroy any enemy ships foolhardy enough to come within range of its powerful guns.

After sometime, its military purpose was replaced by the Tortugas Keys Reservation executive order by Theodore Roosevelt. Then, Dry Tortugas including Fort Jefferson has become a National Park. Presently, the Dry Tortugas National Park receives millions of visitors despite the means to reach the island.

Most of the time, visitors come by ferry, catamaran, or seaplane from Key West Florida. Once in the place, there are different activities you can enjoy and many types of scenery that you will love. Stroll around the island and immerse yourself with different activities like combing, bird watching, camping, fishing, hiking, wildlife watching or ranger led activities.

During April and May, the Audubon Society sponsors guided bird trips that would aide you and perhaps share some interesting stories during the trip. Watch out for a great wildlife spectacle that happens between March and September for almost 100, 000 sooty terns gather on Bush Key for nesting season. Other migrant and local birds are also good to watch. The spectacles from up above, is of equal beauty with that of Dry Tortuga’s marine life. Enjoy swimming, snorkeling or diving together with some professionals. To remember this paradise, underwater photography is truly perfect!

Though this paradise is a bit distanced from the city, the place will definitely give justice to your visit.
