Treasure: Apalachicola National Forest
Apalachicola
National Forest is the largest US National Forest that is located in the state of
Florida. This is definitely one of
Florida’s treasures that you will truly love. Be amazed with the magnificent
landscape of the place and enjoy the numerous activities that you could enjoy.
Place
The
Apalachicola National Forest is an interesting place that combines the art of
actively managing and restoring a natural environment while still caters
numerous recreational activities. Nature
at its best is best defined through the species present in the area. In
Apalachicola National Forest, you can see seven endangered animals and a plant
that belongs to the list made by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the
Endangered Species Act. Namely they are the
gray bat, red-cockaded woodpecker, wood stork, four mollusks and the plant Harper’s
beauty. Aside from these there are also threatened species that are housed in
the area and these beauties are definitely worth seeing.
The forest also houses Leon Sinks or
sinkholes from a system of boardwalks and trails. Around the area, there are
picnic tables; a kiosk, a water fountain, and a restroom with flush toilets are
available. However, swimming, diving, motor vehicles (except in the parking
area), hunting, mountain biking, horseback riding, and ATV and motorcycle
riding are prohibited in the area for safety purposes. Other areas that you’ll
find interesting are the Bradwell Tract, Lake Bradford Tract, Morrison Hammock,
Rocky Bluff and the Savannahs Scenic Byway
Activities
There
are numerous activities that you can enjoy within the area of the Apalachicola
National Forest. Boating, Camping Cycling, Equestrian, Fishing, Hiking,
Hunting, Paddling, Picnicking, sightseeing, and swimming are some of the
suggested activities that you could do. Though be reminded of some places where
other activities are restricted for safety purposes. Also to be reminded to
respect the personal space of any wild animal. Alligators are common in Florida
and some people, fearless of them, feed these reptiles without thinking of the
possible effects. Remember that it is a must to keep distance from any wild
animal for your closure would result to unwanted events either to you or to
other tourists. During camping, be sure to dispose your trash correctly to
avoid the presence of bears.
