Florida’s Treasure: Apalachicola National Forest

Apalachicola National Forest is the largest US National Forest that is located in the state of Florida.  This is definitely one of Florida’s treasures that you will truly love. Be amazed with the magnificent landscape of the place and enjoy the numerous activities that you could enjoy.

Place

The Apalachicola National Forest is an interesting place that combines the art of actively managing and restoring a natural environment while still caters numerous recreational activities.  Nature at its best is best defined through the species present in the area. In Apalachicola National Forest, you can see seven endangered animals and a plant that belongs to the list made by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service under the Endangered Species Act. Namely they are the gray bat, red-cockaded woodpecker, wood stork, four mollusks and the plant Harper’s beauty. Aside from these there are also threatened species that are housed in the area and these beauties are definitely worth seeing.

The forest also houses Leon Sinks or sinkholes from a system of boardwalks and trails. Around the area, there are picnic tables; a kiosk, a water fountain, and a restroom with flush toilets are available. However, swimming, diving, motor vehicles (except in the parking area), hunting, mountain biking, horseback riding, and ATV and motorcycle riding are prohibited in the area for safety purposes. Other areas that you’ll find interesting are the Bradwell Tract, Lake Bradford Tract, Morrison Hammock, Rocky Bluff and the Savannahs Scenic Byway

 

Activities

There are numerous activities that you can enjoy within the area of the Apalachicola National Forest. Boating, Camping Cycling, Equestrian, Fishing, Hiking, Hunting, Paddling, Picnicking, sightseeing, and swimming are some of the suggested activities that you could do. Though be reminded of some places where other activities are restricted for safety purposes. Also to be reminded to respect the personal space of any wild animal. Alligators are common in Florida and some people, fearless of them, feed these reptiles without thinking of the possible effects. Remember that it is a must to keep distance from any wild animal for your closure would result to unwanted events either to you or to other tourists. During camping, be sure to dispose your trash correctly to avoid the presence of bears.
