The Amazon Rainforest
When the brightness of the city has become too much
for us to bear, we often search for a haven where we can enjoy, relax and be
away with all the stress from the busy life in the city. Hence, for a trip that
will surely hide you from the harshness of the city, perhaps the Amazon
Rainforest is the perfect destination for you. The Amazon rainforest also known
as Amazonia is one of the world's greatest natural
resources. The Amazon River which is the life force of the forest begins in the
Peruvian Andes and reaches up to the northern half of South America
particularly in the country of Brazil. The main river is about 4,080 miles
long. Its drainage basin covers 2,722,000 million square miles, and lies in the
countries of Brazil, Columbia, Peru, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, and the three
Guyanas. Brazil contains the majority of this haven where it covers about 60%
of the rainforest.
Hence this gigantic
haven does not only give us a place of comfort but also plays an important in
our lives. As a matter of fact, the Amazon Rainforest is considered to be the
"Lungs of our Planet" for WE owe the Amazon almost 20 % of the
earth’s oxygen. The wonderful range of flora and ecosystem present in the area
is truly amazing. Depending on season, some of the animals that make their home
here are river otters, freshwater river dolphins, turtles, piranha, manatees,
electric eels, and a remarkable, giant air-breathing fish called the piraracu.
On land, you can witness different unique animals such as Jaguars, Poison dart frog, Scarlet macaw and Howler monkey. To sum the number of
species present in the Amazon Rainforest there are over 500 mammals, 175 lizards and over 300 other reptiles’ species and
one third of the world's birds live in here. About 30 million insect types can also
be found here. For a haven like this, anybody can easily feel the presence and
love of nature enfold around you.
Despite the innate beauty of nature present in Amazon
Rainforest, it is very unfortunate that deforestation is a huge problem. Destructions created for the last 50 years
are clearly shown in almost half of the rainforest. Different methods are being
implemented by the World Wide Fund for Nature and other
organizations in order to restore the beauty of this wonder. Climate change has
also added to the present struggles of the Amazon rainforest. The struggle
faced by the rainforest is not simple and any negative effect will surely be
felt not only by the surrounding countries but perhaps even in greater
distances.
For nature lovers and to those who would like to
have a haven that they could run out to in times that the city life gets too
much for us to bear, let us try to do something to save the Amazon Rainforest.
Perhaps, once you visit the place and be able to enjoy the tranquil company of
nature, you’ll be able to understand how beautiful the Amazon Rainforest
is.
